Re: Culture Clash in Latvia – Latvia and its Russian Minority

One third of the population of Latvia has Russian roots. Most of them are so-called “non-citizens”: they have neither Latvian nor other citizenship. For years now they have felt discriminated against. At the same time, more and more Latvians fear the possibility of a Russian invasion.

A new educational reform has exacerbated the conflict. It stipulates that in the future school lessons are to be held only in Latvian. The Russian minority is up in arms against the new law.

Is a peaceful coexistence even possible in Latvia?
