Classical music
BERLIN live presents a long line-up of world-famous stars at regular intervals. Every two weeks, today’s finest musicians perform to an invited audience at the new venue in Neukölln, Berlin. BERLIN live brings together a shared musical concept, reference or era. The concerts are broadcast on Arte.
Star violinist Daniel Hope invites artists and friends to his home to give concerts in his living room in Berlin and now across the rest of Germany. This concert series was launched on the British violinist’s initiative as a ray of hope during the lockdowns brought about by the coronavirus crisis in Europe and around the world. Following the living room concerts, Daniel Hope is embarking on a tour of Germany to support a music scene that has been at a standstill during the crisis. Accompanied by pianist and composer Christoph Israel, he will be joined by distinguished guests such as Max Raabe, Sarah Willis, Barrie Kosky, Heike Makatsch, Till Brönner, Katharina Thalbach, Amihai Grosz and many others.
“Lebenslieder” is the name of the new cultural programme on Das Erste, produced under the auspices of rbb. The programme is presented by the successful singer Max Mutzke and will initially run for four episodes. Over the course of 45 minutes, it explores the songs that have shaped a person’s life: what did the soundtrack to their childhood sound like? What is a song that comforts you or gives you courage? What role does music play in one’s own life story? The guests Max Mutzke will be chatting to in the first series are violinist Daniel Hope, entertainer Barbara Schöneberger, actress Annette Frier and comedian Bülent Ceylan. Together, they’ll sing their way through the soundtrack of their lives.

“Berlin Live” – the ARTE concert series from the trendy Neukölln club SchwuZ – launched an emergency support programme for everyone missing live music during the coronavirus pandemic: for one week in April, “Berlin Live” presented bands and solo artists every day with exclusive concerts on the digital cultural platform ARTE Concert. The line-up included young Berlin bands and stars of the scene: Kadaver, Say Yes Dog, Drangsal, Fatoni, Alice Phoebe Lou, ÄTNA, Odd Couple and Malakoff Kowalski. Maintaining the required social distancing and adhering to all hygiene measures, yet performing with full commitment, they each played a 30-minute club concert for the digital ARTE audience.

For our series “Hauskonzert” (ZDF/Arte), we regularly send bands straight to where it hurts the most: to their fans’ homes! Emotional highs and blown fuses included. In our latest episode, the Viennese rock ’n’ roll high-flyers Wanda are playing at a care home for people with intellectual disabilities. Instead of 12,000 roaring fans, 120 curious spectators are waiting here for a concert and an encounter unlike anything seen before!

The ‘Introducing’ evenings in Berlin are reviving the good old Trüffelschwein tradition. Once a month, Arte showcases exciting newcomers who have to prove what they’re made of live in front of an audience – with passion, enthusiasm and vigour.
