Re: Parkour to the Rescue – The Battle for Naples’s Lost Youth
The situation in the Italian Mezzogiorno is dramatic: 10% of the people there live in absolute poverty. Many of them in the metropolitan area of Naples, especially in problem districts like Barra. Here, almost every third person drops out of school, and unemployment is at 40%. Many of the young eventually join the Camorra.
The future of Antonio, son of a local gangster, also seemed written in stone. The 22-year-old already had some small crimes to his name, but then he broke with the scene. Nowadays, Antonio works to get the local kids off the streets: as a member of the association “Il warehouse di Iqbal“, he trains kids in the sport of parkour. But although the urban obstacle-course sport helps give young people a new attitude to life, the association is struggling to survive.
Arte Re: accompanies youngsters in the south of Naples as they conquer their city in a playful and sporty way by overcoming all the obstacles facing them – in the truest sense of the word.
